Who turned off the lights?

The other day I was in the grocery store when the lights went out. Considering the current economic climate, I couldn't help but wonder if they forgot to pay their electric bill. But I think someone probably knocked over a telephone pole in the neighborhood.
God's power is like the electricity that powers our homes. The Bible says that God's power supply for us is always on. It was paid in full through eternity by Jesus Christ. However, sometimes we turn off the switch or the power is disrupted because of a breakdown of some sort. We have the power available to live the life that God intends for us to live. We have the power abundantly supplied to help us through life's difficulties, like school, or jobs, or to accomplish the work that God has asked us to do. But too many times, we turn off the switch. We turn our back on the Holy Spirit by doing the opposite of what God's word tells us to do. We essentially quench the Holy Spirit by choosing to sin.
2 Peter 1:3 says that God's divine power has granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness... God has given us the power to live a victorious, joyful life through Christ. It's available for us to use. Whether we do or not is up to us.

true disciples

In our Sunday study of Matthew, we learned that disciple means learner, or student or follower. Jesus said in John 8:31 that "If you abide in My Word, then you are truly disciples of mine; and you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." To abide means to remain in, endure in the word. So the mark of a true disciple is that he or she is remaining in the Word, innundating themselves in the Word, studying the Word, ingesting the Word; because the Word is truth. There is so little truth in the church today. Instead, it has been replaced with relativism, experience, emotionalism and every other attempt by Satan to dilute the absolute truth of the Word of God. Jesus stated that later in that same passage. "You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him...for he is a liar and the father of lies."
This Wednesday evening we are beginning 2 Peter. In this epistle, Peter stirs up the church, reminding them of the importance of the truth as taught in the Scriptures. "And so we have the prophetic word made more sure, to which you do well to pay attention...." "But know this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture is a matter of one's own interpretation, for no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God."
This holy breath of God, this divinely inspired word, is truth. Satan once bound us in chains of darkness by lies. But God's truth will set us free. Whatever your need, whatever your sickness, whatever your disease, whatever sin you have become enslaved to, the only thing that will truly set you free is the truth of God's word. Let's study it, read it, and pour it into our souls until it cleanses us and renews our minds. Hope you will join us Sundays at 8am in Bethany Beach or at 6pm at my house in Millville on Wednesday evenings for dinner and Bible study.
